This large patch of cryptobiotic soil
is on top of No Man's Mesa, on BLM lands in the Paria-Hackberry
roadless area near Grand
Staircase-Escalante National Monument. A symbiotic web of lichen,
algae, and fungus, this soil holds water and fixes nitrogen, but
is rapidly destroyed by overgrazing and by human recreational use.
